Moving internationally or moving to Canada alone can be a very stressful ordeal. For this reason, it is best to leave the moving services to professionals, who can take care of all your needs, from disassembling and packing your furniture to moving it to unloading the truck, unpacking the furniture, and assembling it where you wish it would go. But how to choose among the many moving companies working in the Toronto area?

Well, we took it upon ourselves to review these companies and make sure that you only get the best of the best. We looked into the years they’ve spent on the market, the services that they provide, as well as the online reviews that their previous clients have left on their services. Professional packing, basic insurance, and additional insurance for all and not just valuable belongings, hiring experienced movers, and having an array of services that sets them apart from other moving companies were all taken into consideration.

With this in mind, it may not always be necessary to choose the best of the best movers. Hiring movers who can provide a timely service at a reasonable price will most often be enough. However, it is also true that some people take great pride in their belongings and that they, naturally, want them protected. For this, you will need a reliable moving truck and a stress-free moving experience. Long-distance moves are usually all but stress-free.

Best Mover in Toronto

For this reason, it is clear that you may need to consider choosing experienced movers and choosing only the best moving companies. Having the peace of mind of knowing that the moving company will deal with all the hassle is a no-brainer when it comes to picking the professional movers that will help you relocate. In fact, some of the best movers offer outstanding customer service, knowing that with moving, there is a whole different array of things that you need to organize.

Connecting the new utilities, ending old and starting new contracts, looking for a good school for your children, as well as finding a new job or starting one if you already have one. When it comes to all of these, you need peace of mind to ensure that you get the best of the best in all of these. The moving industry has long recognized that this is a stressful period, and has moved from overcharging for the basic services to ensuring that they can provide a service that is stress-free, reliable, and affordable. More and more companies have a transparent pricing policy to avoid any uncomfortable moments. Only the best stay in this line of business. Let’s now go and consider the top ten movers in Toronto:

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Moving Company

When choosing a moving company for your needs, there are several factors to take into consideration. As there are many moving companies in the downtown Toronto area (our list alone has 10 of them, and we were strict in selecting them), you will need to do a bit of research on your own as well. Basic insurance, packing services, city moving, international moving, overall services offered, no hidden fees and much more need to be taken into consideration before you actually make the decision on who to hire. Here are a few of them:

  • Consider where you are moving from moving from a Canadian city to another Canadian city is one thing, while moving internationally, even though maybe just from the US to Canada is a whole different thing. Make sure that the company you choose can do the move for you, as not many companies do international moving
  • Consider your budget – moving is not cheap. Ask around about the prices or send requests for some free quotes. When it comes to these, you may need to consider that your items may be delicate and will therefore cost more to move – consider this when asking for a free online quote
  • Consider the pricing model that you like – most companies offer flat fees, meaning that you know exactly what you are paying for and how much. While some may offer flat fees per kilometer or mile between the places you are moving from and moving to, most of them will charge per hour – usually more than CAD100 per hour for a team of two people doing the move for you
  • Another thing to consider is the scope of services that you will need to have delivered to you – in general, most people are OK with packing their own belongings when moving and unpacking them once the destination has been reached. This can save you time and money and can help the company save some time as well – keep in mind that most companies will charge per HOUR that their employees spend working on moving you
  • Consider the company’s online reviews – check out both the most positive and the most negative comments. When it comes to these, you should consider both ends of the spectrum, but be careful, because overly positive or negative comments do not always have to be truthful. Look for a balance and repeating comments, as they are most likely to be close to the true experience clients had with this company
  • Consider the services that the company offers – the more services there are, the higher the likelihood that the services you need will be covered as well. With this in mind, you need to consider that the additional services will cost more, as they will necessarily take more time
  • The time the company has spent in the market – we generally suggest that you do not employ very young companies. In general, they lack the experience and the expertise needed to ensure that your furniture stays safe. On the other hand, young companies have to rely on lower prices and innovation to attract new customers

Check Out 5 Tips For Choosing A Moving Company:

Tips for a Smooth Moving Experience

There are some tips that you should consider for a smooth moving experience. As this is a very stressful activity, it remains clear that you need to be organized and that you will need to consider taking your time to do things the right way. When it comes to organizing yourself, time organization is the most important aspect, as you should generally start planning ahead and make sure that your move is something that takes an hour or two a day, and not two weeks crammed together with the moving itself, looking for a new job and school for the kinds. This being said, let’s consider the tips and tricks for a smooth moving:

Packing Tips and Tricks

When packing, it is important to stay organized and to understand that rush decisions today will cost you twice as much time tomorrow as they would have cost you had you made them in time. Let’s consider some of them:

  • When packing, make sure you have enough boxes (even more than you need). Most moving companies will provide these for free. Start weeks in advance and first start packing out-of-season items and items you will not need for a long time after the move is over. All the packed boxes should be labeled (look below for how to label boxes) and they should be put away in a secure spot, away from mold, humidity, water, insects, and rodents
  • When packing, also make sure that the delicate items are well protected. Styrofoam, bubble wrap, and even old newspapers can be used for this. Pack your delicate china, decorations, etc. first as these are non-essential items that you will likely not need until the move is over
  • When packing clothes, you can simply tie up all the hangers you have in the wardrobe with a wire, slide a garbage bin liner from below your clothes, and tie it up to the hangers. This way, when unpacking, you will only have to hang the clothes, remove the liner and the zip-ties and you are good to go
  • Other clothes can be taken in bundles and placed in boxes in an orderly way – make sure they remain in the box as you place them, to avoid having to iron them again after the move is over
  • Use vacuum bags to reduce the size of your clothes and kids’ plush toys when moving – these items are not heavy, but they take up a lot of space. By expelling the air out of them, you make sure that you can fit more in a single truck.
  • Do the same to comforters
  • Pack books and similar heavy items in smaller boxes for ease of carrying
  • Any glassware or other delicate items should be packed with a lot of protection – do not feel sorry to even place a single item per box if the item is pricey
  • Label all the boxes by the floor and the room they come from – this way, you will know which box goes where even without opening them, and this will streamline the moving process

Take A Look At The Best House Moving Tips (and Mistakes to Avoid):

  • If you have a floor plan of the home you will be moving to, you should consider numbering all the rooms on the floor plan and labeling the boxes with the numbers of the rooms that they should be taken TO, rather than FROM – this makes the movers’ job much easier, especially if they are in charge of unloading the truck and unpacking your items
  • If you have any electronics, make sure they go with you and do not send them with the moving company – unless there is a desktop computer that you cannot take with you for obvious reasons. Always pack your electronics in a tightly fitting box and make sure you consider placing them in a secure spot in the truck, with no heavy items above
  • On top of this, when packing the truck, make sure that each box is easily accessible, as this will ensure the customs officers can access and control whatever they need to when the need is such and if you are moving across the borders
  • Good unloading of the truck starts with proper loading – the biggest and the heaviest boxes should be closest to the floor, while the lighter and smaller items should be placed on top of those. Make sure that no boxes are too heavy, to spare your back, and ensure you get the best possible grip on them when carrying them

Handling Fragile Items

Fragile items should be packed in protective wraps and be left close to the floor, whatever the size of the boxes may be. Never place anything on top of them, and make sure that they cannot move around. Placing them in between other boxes can also help, but make sure they cannot slip out of their position and rumble around the back of the truck. When it comes to the most fragile items you may have, and if you are moving by car (you and your family, consider carrying these in the trunk of the car or on the back seat and be careful when driving.

Particularly expensive or bulky items should be transported separately. When it comes to these, you should consider moving them in smaller trucks. Although this may seem like a piece of advice that is over the top, just imagine your piano stuck between boxes, with other boxes on top of it, and the truck transporting it hitting a pothole on the road to your new destination. Many moving companies offer piano moving as a separate service, so make sure you get the best of the services provided and ask for a quote on moving your piano.

Efficient Moving Day Strategies

There are many more strategies that can help you make the move and the moving day a much easier experience. Some of the moving companies in Toronto will enable you to have a stress-free experience of moving, but regardless of the services offered in the Toronto area, there is a lot that you can do to help yourself and others. First things, first, how you take care of your belongings in the days before the move day is going to have a big impact on the loading and unloading times and will make your moving day a busy, but stress-free day.

On top of this, some of the best professional movers out there offer packing and unpacking. Expert movers know how to pack your belongings properly and having the belongings fully insured before the movers come to take them over will make you worry less about their sake. Here are some more moving strategies, this time for the moving day itself:

  • Get a good night’s rest – you will need all the energy that you can get
  • Pack an overnight bag – to make sure that your essentials and 1 or 2 changes of clothing are easily available to you
  • Pack basic toiletries in your overnight bag – as this will help you stay fresh and clean and avoid impulse purchases while having more important things on your mind
  • Make sure that the utilities will be disconnected from the old place on the day of your move or the day after – Toronto utilities can schedule the disconnection date for you
  • Toronto Utilities can also schedule the connection day for you if you are moving into the greater Toronto area – this should be the day of your moving in or the day before
  • At the same time, you should consider taking your most valuable possessions with you in the car, as you move – jewelry, artwork, and heirloom items are commonly taken with you
  • The services offered by the professional movers usually include delivering the right-sized boxes to you – use these and make sure that you get to use the onboard space the best you can in the truck – if it is not delivered to you pack it up a day or two before your parting date, you should consider gathering a team of people that can help you load it – you need to be fast and efficient here, as most Toronto movers charge per hour
  • Make a checklist of all the things that need to be done before leaving your home – at the same time, you should consider all the things around the house that need to be done – checking all the breakers, the taps and faucets, whether all the windows are closed seem to be easy tasks, but in the rush of the moment a lot can be forgotten

FAQs

What Is the Average Cost of Movers in Toronto?

An average Toronto moving company charges between CAD50-250 per hour to move you. The final price that you will pay depends on the size of the apartment, the distance that the move is carried over, as well as all other costs that may stem from the move itself, including the number and amount of things to be moved. In any case, you can get a free moving quote from most movers in the area.

How Much Do You Tip Movers in Toronto?

Tipping is a big part of the Canadian culture. When it comes to how much you should tip your movers, some CAD50 per workday should be enough. If they worked less than 8 hours, you can tip them less than CAD50 – always tip according to the work hours.

What Day Is the Cheapest to Hire Movers?

Most movers in Toronto are very busy during the weekends – including Friday. For this reason, you should consider moving during the weekdays – Monday to Thursday. This way, you do not have to worry about additional charges being made simply because the mover is busy. At the same time, this will give you a long weekend to unload and unpack your belongings, and you should be able to take some rest as well – cramming an entire move into a single weekend can be overwhelming.

Final Thoughts

Even if you hire the best Toronto moving company, you should still understand that moving is a stressful period in anyone’s life and that you should do what you can to help alleviate as much of this stress as you can. All you need is a professional attitude and organization. No special equipment or expertise in the field is needed on your side. However, knowing how to choose a good moving company can help you save a lot of time and stress, and for that reason, we’ve come up with a list of the best movers in the greater Toronto area.
